Failure on the 2018 Rocket
The 2018 rocket experienced a catastrophic failure due to the buckling of the recovery coupler. This caused the rocket to have a high horizontal velocity, ultimately ripping the parachute and drogue. Later we determined that a machining defect made by the 2018 recovery coupler sub-team compromised the structure. The data on the Ravens was recoverable, but there was noticeable damage to the LiPo batteries that power the custom data logger. Since these batteries were housed near the Ravens, our configuration had the potential for a fire that could have result in data loss. In future rockets the batteries will be changed to a non-LiPo alternative or will be isolated from the recovery electronics system.
